Brickwork by T & R Paving

The service

Specialist brickwork, laid to a high standard

Brickwork carries load and holds back ground, so it has to be built on proper foundations and laid square. We build boundary and garden walls, driveway piers, retaining walls and steps, matching the brick and the coursing to your property so new work sits alongside the old without looking out of place. Retaining walls in particular need the right footings and drainage behind them, and we build them to hold rather than lean. We also repoint brickwork where the mortar has eroded or the brick face has started to spall, crumbling or flaking after years of frost and damp, raking out the old joints and repointing to match the original bond, whether that is English bond, Flemish bond or a standard stretcher bond, so the repair blends in rather than standing out.

Surbiton's villas are built in good-quality London stock and red brick, with strong boundary walls and piers, so matching colour, bond and mortar matters. We build new work on proper foundations and finish joints neatly.

Can you match my existing brickwork?

In most cases yes. We source brick to match the colour and size as closely as possible so new work blends with what is already there.

Do you build retaining walls?

We do, with the footings and drainage they need to hold ground safely over time.

Do garden walls need foundations?

Yes. Every wall we build sits on a concrete foundation dug and poured to suit its height and the ground, which is what stops a wall leaning or cracking later.

How high can you build a wall?

We build walls to suit the setting. Taller and retaining walls need the right footings and piers, and there are planning limits near a highway, so we talk the height through at the quote.

Can you build piers for gates or a driveway entrance?

Yes. Piers for gates, driveway entrances and fence posts are a common part of the brickwork we do, capped and matched to the property.

What is repointing brickwork?

Repointing is renewing the mortar joints in an existing wall once the original mortar has eroded, cracked or fallen out, usually from age, frost or damp. We rake out the old, failing mortar to a proper depth and repack the joints with a fresh, matched mix, which restores both the look and the weatherproofing of the wall.

How do you repoint brickwork?

We rake out the old mortar to a consistent depth, brush and dampen the joints, then repoint in a mortar mix and profile matched to the original, usually a bucket-handle or flush joint on older brick, working in small sections so the new mortar doesn't dry out before it's finished.

What are common mistakes when repointing brickwork?

The two we see most often are mortar mixed too strong for the brick, which traps moisture and can force the brick face to spall, and not raking the old joint out deep enough before repointing, which means the new mortar never bonds and falls out again within a year or two.

How do you point brickwork?

Pointing is finishing the mortar joints on new brickwork as it's built, striking each joint to a neat, consistent profile as the courses go up. It's the same skill as repointing but on new work rather than a repair, and we finish every wall we build to the same standard.

How do you get paint off brickwork?

It depends on the paint and the brick, but we generally recommend a poultice-based paint remover rather than sandblasting or harsh acid washing, both of which can damage the brick face and lead to spalling later. We can advise on the right approach, or bring in a specialist for larger areas, as part of a wider brickwork job.

What is the difference between English bond and Flemish bond brickwork?

English bond alternates whole courses of headers and stretchers, and is generally the stronger of the two; Flemish bond alternates headers and stretchers within the same course, which gives the more decorative pattern common on Victorian and Georgian frontages. When we repoint or extend an existing wall, we match whichever bond it was originally built in.
